Fear of Death

Why are we so uncomfortable with the word death?

Dry cracked earth stretching to a low golden horizon with distant trees.

Why are we so uncomfortable with the word death?

Is it because speaking of it makes it feel closer?

Or because we spend so much of our lives pretending it isn’t quietly walking beside us?

We are born knowing only one certainty—that one day we will die.

Our very first act after leaving the womb is an inhalation.

Our last will be an exhalation.

Everything that exists between those two breaths is what we call life.

That space is our freedom.

Some choose to spend it fearing death.

Others spend it postponing life.

I would rather let the certainty of death remind me to live every single moment as fully and joyfully as I can.

Perhaps death was never the opposite of life.

Perhaps it is the reason life is precious at all.
